Sealing in Delhi to resume from today
The city remained on tenterhooks all through Tuesday as the traders enforced a complete bandh marked by road blockades, stone-pelting, tyre-burning and vandalism.
The cops have their task cut out for Wednesday when, as directed by the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee on Tuesday evening, the sealings would resume. There is an air of suspense over which shops will be targeted first but the MCD says it’s ready.
So are the traders. Though no bandh has been called officially, the traders say they will intensify their agitation. "We will collect wherever sealings happen on Wednesday, close all shops in the vicinity and protest," said Praveen Khandelwal, secretary general of Confederation of All India Traders. He said the protests will be non-violent.
Many traders in south Delhi, Rohini and parts of east Delhi have decided to keep their shops closed, a decision that Khandelwal said was a 'personal' one.
A majority of the private schools have decided to remain closed on Wednesday, in keeping with the government directive to its own schools. Vasant Valley will remain open.
Most schools are, however, taking no chances. While the situation was much better on Tuesday compared to last Wednesday, the protests were widespread. Slogan-shouting traders blocked busy intersections, damaged some 10 odd buses and indulged in rampant vandalism, particularly on Vikas Marg, Mayur Vihar, Rohini, Jail Road and Paharganj.
East Delhi was one of the main trouble-spots. On Vikas Marg, five people were injured. "Teargas shells were used on Vikas Marg after some people started a fire but there was no lathicharge at any place in Delhi," said additional commissioner Depender Pathak.
