Sealing drive resumes in Delhi

The controversial sealing of unauthorised businesses in the capital resumed on Wednesday with a shopping complex in South Delhi becoming the first target of the court-ordered drive.

NEW DELHI: The controversial sealing of unauthorised businesses in the capital resumed on Wednesday with a shopping complex in South Delhi becoming the first target of the court-ordered drive.

An MCD sealing team consisting of an executive engineer, junior engineer and officials of power and water authorities sealed the first shop of CTC Plaza in Ashram of South Delhi at around 10 am. The resumption of the drive, which was halted after the violence during the September 20 traders' bandh, came after the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring panel's direction to the MCD to start the action on Wednesday.

The modus operandi of the drive was not revealed by the Monitoring Panel this morning so as to avoid gathering of traders to prevent the MCD action.

Unlike in the past, this time it was not the MCD but the panel which has decided on when and where to carry out the operations.

The traders have said they would oppose the sealing drive.

Heavy security arrangements have been made to prevent disruption of the drive. MCD officials sealed CTC Plaza, Thapar business centre and Bata building near Ashram on Ring Road amidst tight security.

Personnel of paramilitary CRPF and Rapid Action Force (RAF) and those from Delhi police have been deployed to prevent any untoward incident.

MCD teams also disconnected power supply to the sealed premises, officials said.

So far, no incident of protest has been reported and sealing was progressing smoothly, they said.
