Scuffle breaks out between TMC and BJP at statue inauguration

A major scuffle broke out between Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday and the CISF had to fire seven rounds in the air, in North 24 Parganas district’s Bhatpara, in the presence of BJP MP Arjun Singh who went to garland a statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on his 125th birth anniversary.

The Trinamool leaders came to inaugurate the same statue at the same location. A huge police force has been deployed, following the incident, and the area has been cordoned off.

The scuffle broke out between the two parties when Singh went to garland the statue and pay respect to the iconic leader on Netaji’s 125 birth anniversary. The situation went out of control when an attempt was made to distribute masks during the programme. The workers of both the parties fought with each other, following which CISF, who are in-charge of MP Arjun Singh’s security, fired several rounds in the air.


“Anyone can pay respect to Netaji Subhash Bose’s statue as he is not Trinamool Congress’ property. The Trinamool Congress attacked me following which my security had to fire in the air,” Arjun Singh said.

After the incident, BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar reached the spot. Majumdar said that he will draw attention of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) as Singh has been provided Z-category security by the MHA. “This kind of attack on the MP is unacceptable,” Majumdar said.

Trinamool Minister Jyotipriya Mullick claimed that his party will not tolerate “act of goons” by Singh and questioned how CISF could open fire.
