Scheme for girl child to include insurance

The Centre is planning to provide cash as well as non-cash incentives to families with girl children.

NEW DELHI: In a move to correct the skewed sex ratio in the country, the Centre is planning to provide cash as well as non-cash incentives to families with girl children. Families who delay the marriage of their girls beyond 18 years will also be rewarded, the official said.

The scheme, which will soon be launched on a pilot basis in some backward districts, also includes a sub-component for providing insurance cover to the girl child.

Wiser by the failure of other schemes driven by similar noble intent, official sources said, government plans to closely monitor the scheme and study its impact on community attitude and practices towards the girl child.

Apart from the depleting gender ratio which has got alarmingly skewed in northern states like Punjab and Haryana, the government is also concerned about societal biases that bind girls to traditional roles. For instance, 64.92% of school-going girls drop out before the 10th standard.
