SC to hear plea for decommissioning of Mullaperiyar dam

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday a petition seeking decommissioning of the 113-year-old Mullaperiyar dam, which allegedly poses a threat to people of Kerala living in the dam's vicinity.
The petition filed by an NGO, Jana Shakti was mentioned before a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan which decided to tag it with the pending matter on the dam controversy between Tamil Nadu and Kerala and posted the hearing for February 26.
Former bureaucrat K J Alphons, appearing for the NGO, submitted that the dam constructed of obsolete materials like surti and technology, which was commissioned in 1895 has lived its life.
The continued existence of the dam was a threat to millions of people living in the vicinity of the dam. In case it gives way the Idduki dam, which is down stream and is one of the biggest dam in Asia, will also be affected.
The NGO said Tamil Nadu was causing hurdles in decommissioning the dam as it was the beneficiary of the water available for irrigation and electricity generation.
The lease deed of 1886 and 1970 for period of 999 years for the land on which the dam was built was impractical, it said adding that the NGO was also aggrieved by the offer of the Kerala government to built a replacement dam at a cost of Rs 500 crore when all along it was Tamil Nadu and its people who have been the sole beneficiaries of the Mullaperiyar dam.
