New Delhi: The Supreme Court did not sit on Tuesday, a rarity on a working day, to send a signal to all high courts and lower courts to take the threat from the Covid-19 outbreak seriously and work from home as much as possible.

The top court, which had laid out an advance list for the day, did not sit in court. A bench will be available on Wednesday, a court release said. The court registry will function with skeletal staff strength to help it hear urgent matters.

“The Chief Justice of India has, after consulting his colleagues, directed that during the course of the ensuing week, a bench of two judges, as may be necessary to hear extremely urgent cases, will be available to transact judicial work.”

“A bench will be available for court work on Wednesday…and the cause list will be notified on the day previous to the hearing,” it said.

The hearing may be conducted through video-conferencing mode.
