SC sets aside polls in 50 Punjab municipal wards, orders fresh elections after panel finds nomination obstruction
New Delhi: SC has set aside elections in 50 municipal wards in Punjab and ordered fresh polling after a fact-finding commission reported widespread obstruction during the nomination process. A three-member bench headed by CJI Surya Kant ordered fresh elections in 28 wards in Patiala district and 22 in Moga. The local body elections were held on December 21, 2024.

SC accepted the findings of a one-member panel headed by former Punjab and Haryana HC judge Nirmaljit Kaur, which reported that nomination papers were 'snatched, torn or destroyed' and that candidates were 'assaulted, detained or threatened'.
