SC refuses extension of time to UP sugarmills for due payment

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to grant extension of time to Uttar Pradesh sugarmills for payment of their balance cane dues to farmers for the current crushing season.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to grant extension of time to Uttar Pradesh sugarmills for payment of their balance cane dues to farmers for the current crushing season.

A bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir dismissed the petition of the sugarmills seeking extension of time.

Earlier On May 15, the Supreme Court had asked the sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh to pay sugarcane prices for the 2007-08 season at the rate of Rs 110 per quintal (100 kgs) within three weeks.

A bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat in an interim order had said that the sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh shall pay the rate (Rs 110 a quintal) fixed by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court in within three weeks for 2007-08.
