SC orders CBI inquiry into Mulayam's assets

The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the assets of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the assets of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The CBI inquiry was ordered after a PIL was filed in the disproportionate assets case. The PIL alleges that Mulayam and his family members have amassed wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income.

It was filed by social activist Vishwanath Chaturvedi, who in his plea had attached sale deed copies of properties that the SP leader and his sons had purchased in the last 28 years during which he was in public life.

Besides the Chief Minister, the apex court directed probe against his MP son Akhilesh Yadav, his wife Dimple and other son Prateek.

A Bench headed by Justice A R Lakshmanan said that the CBI will scrutinise the documents and decide if a case is made out against them or not.

“The allegation is made against the Chief Minister of a big state which has cast cloud on his integrity. Hence, it is in his interest and also to hold public morality in high offices that an independent agency should look into it,” the Bench said.
