NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh seeking explanation why a contempt proceedings not to be initiated against him for his alleged remarks against the judiciary in his phone tapping transcript.

A bench headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan also sought response of the Samajwadi Party leader on the plea seeking vacation of its interim order, restraining media from publishing the transcript of his conversation in the illegal tapping of his phone calls.

The court asked the Centre to respond on the contention that Singh cannot be given the court’s protection as the nature of his conversation with various politicians, bureaucrats and industrialists, which despite being tapped illegally, clearly indicated that he was allegedly indulging in illegal activities.

The order was passed on two separate applications filed by an NGO, Centre for Public Interest Litigation, and Mumbai-based resident Devendra Mandavawal seeking intervention in the petition filed by Singh in 2006 for laying down fresh guidelines for tapping telephone conversations.

However, Solicitor-General G E Vahanvati on behalf of Centre said that new guidelines are already in place. If court will dispose off Singh’s petition in view of the guidelines already in place then the February 27, 2006, order restraining media from publishing the transcripts of the conversation will automatically go, said Vahanvati.
