SC issues notices on empowering EC

The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought replies from the Centre and the Election Commission on a petition taking a cudgel to empower the poll panel to reject the nomination papers of the candidates not furnishing their complete details.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought replies from the Centre and the Election Commission on a petition taking a cudgel to empower the poll panel to reject the nomination papers of the candidates not furnishing their complete details.

A bench comprising Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan and Justice RV Raveendran issued notices to the centre and commission after hearing the preliminary plea.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan appearing for petitioner NGO, Resurgence India, said that at present the commission did not have the power to reject the nomination papers in case of incomplete and suppressive affidavit filed by a candidate.
