SC asks NCDRC to dispose of cases of Unitech buyers in eight weeks
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday directed the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ( NCDRC) to dispose of cases related to 120 homebuyers of Unitech Vistas and 111 buyers of Unitech Residences projects within eight weeks.

The court also asked all directors of Unitech, including its chairman Ramesh Chandra and managing directors Ajay Chandra and Sanjay Chandra, to be present in the court on May 8, when other cases against the real estate developer come up for hearing, said lawyer ML Lahoty who represented the Vistas and Residences homebuyers.

A Unitech spokesperson, however, said the company is not aware of any order regarding appearance of all its directors on May 8.

According to Lahoty, the SC accepted the plaintiffs’ request to ask the NCDRC to expedite their cases. NCDRC is a quasi-judicial body. Its rulings are legally binding.

He said the apex court also did not entertain a comprehensive 150-page proposal submitted by Unitech detailing the complete plan of projects execution and mechanism to repay the homebuyers. “Unitech submitted their proposal and broadly requested the court to not direct refunds to homebuyers so that they have liquidity to complete their projects. However, I objected to the proposal,” Lahoty said.
