Former J&K governor Satyapal Malik passes away

Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Chaudhary Satya Pal Malik passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79. The news of his demise was confirmed through a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

Malik had been undergoing treatment for kidney-related ailments at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.



Satyapal Malik's Political Career


A prominent Jat leader from Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, Malik began his political career as a student leader. He was first elected as an MLA in 1974 on a Bharatiya Kranti Dal ticket led by Chaudhary Charan Singh.

He went on to serve as a Rajya Sabha member and later as a Lok Sabha MP from Aligarh under the Janata Dal. Over the decades, Malik was associated with several political parties including the Lok Dal and Samajwadi Party.

Malik held the Governor post in multiple states and served as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir during the crucial period of Article 370’s abrogation in 2019.
