Sarkozy calls on EU to avoid crisis over Irish no to treaty

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Saturday that European Union member states must continue ratifying the EU reform treaty to avoid a "crisis" over the Irish "no" vote on the text.

PARIS: French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Saturday that European Union member states must continue ratifying the EU reform treaty to avoid a "crisis" over the Irish "no" vote on the text.

With France set to take over the presidency of the European Union on July 1, Sarkozy said Ireland's rejection of the EU treaty created "an additional difficulty" but stressed that ratification must continue.

"The others must continue ratification... so that the Irish incident does not become a crisis," Sarkozy said at a joint news conference with US President George W Bush.
