GUWAHATI: A boat with nearly 40 passengers has capsized in the river Brahmaputra. Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered inquiry. Additional Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah has been directed by the chief minister to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

The Additional Chief Secretary been directed to investigate into the reasons for the boat capsize and the factors triggering the mishap and submit report at the earliest. A machine operated country boat, travelling from Fancy bazaar to Madhyam Khanda ghat in North Guwahati, capsized.


A senior officer in the Kamrup (metro) administration who does not want to be quoted told ET, “At least 20 persons are feared drowned. NDRF and the SDRF team are pressed into rescue operation.”

He said, “The boat developed technical snag and attempts to repair same in water failed.” Not phasing out of old boats has caused outrage among the public. Several people commuting in these boats complained that this is common phenomena and there is hardly any attempt by the authorities concerned to address the same.
