NEW DELHI: The BJP in Assam is feeling the backdraft of the finalisation of the Land Border Agreement (LBA) with Bangladesh, as the party’s view that territory in Assam should not part of the agreement was over ridden by the Central government. Union minister for youth and sports affairs Sarbanada Sonowal, told ET that protests against the BJP in Assam (effigies of the minister are being burnt during protests, and a 10 hour bandh was called on Wednesday) were “unfair” as it was chief minister Tarun Gogoi who “failed to reflect the sentiments of the people of Assam.”

“The chief minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, head of the elected government in Assam has failed to reflect the sentiments of the people of Assam. The people wanted what the BJP had reflected in its stance, Gogoi should be risen above party lines and should have supported the Assam BJP view,” he said. He added that the central government, including external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj had tried hard to convince the Congress.
