Sarabjit's issue echoes in Rajya Sabha

The rejection by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf of mercy petition of Sarabjit Singh found its echoes in the Rajya Sabha with both ruling Congress and Opposition BJP demanding a House resolution against the move.

NEW DELHI: The rejection by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf of mercy petition of Sarabjit Singh on Monday found its echoes in the Rajya Sabha with both ruling Congress and Opposition BJP demanding a House resolution against the move.

As soon as the House met for the day, Rashid Alvi (Cong) raised the issue of death warrant against Sarabjit for his alleged involvement in four bomb blasts in Pakistan in 1990, saying the House should pass a resolution against the hanging.

He was joined by Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi (BJP) who accused the Government of inaction on the issue.

Chairman Hamid Ansari said he would request the Government to respond to the concerns of the members.

"We all understand the issue (and) we all are concerned about it... The Government may be requested to state its position (on the issue)," he said.

He said the concern of the House would be conveyed to the Government and it may be asked to state its position.
