Conrad Sangma announces probe into Meghalaya incidents
Following violent protests in Shillong and adjoining areas, the Meghalaya government has decided to constitute a judicial inquiry under the Commission of Inquiry Act, to look into the events that took place on August 13 morning.

Violent protests broke out in different places after General Secretary of Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council, Chesterfield Thangkhiew, was killed in a police operation on Friday. Chesterfield was a former militant and police have alleged his involvement in the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion at Iew Shillong, Laitumkhrah, last Tuesday in which two people were injured.
The state government has deployed five companies of the Central Armed Paramilitary Forces, including BSF and CRPF, in Shillong city. The state has also decided to extend the ongoing curfew till 5 am on Wednesday (August 18) and extend the suspension of mobile internet services by another 24 hours.
A petrol bomb was hurled at Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s residence at 3rd Mile, Upper Shillong, in the wee hours of Sunday. A temporary check point of Ri Bhoi Police was burnt down by miscreants.
The Cabinet, on Monday, stated that apart from the judicial inquiry, the Cabinet has also agreed to set up a Peace Committee, which will be chaired by deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong and will have Cabinet ministers Hamletson Dohling and Renikton Tongkhar Lyngdoh as members. The committee will coopt other members from civil society, including religious organisations and other stakeholders.
