Sajjan Kumar writes to Rahul Gandhi, resigns from Congress

Convicted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar has resigned from the Congress party's primary membership. Sajjan Kumar has written to party president Rahul Gandhi submitting his resignation from the primary membership of the party, PTI quoted Congress sources as saying.

"I tender my resignation with immediate effect from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress in the wake of the judgement of the hon'be high court of Delhi against me," he said in the letter to Gandhi.

Thirty-four years after the 1984 killings, the Delhi High Court on Monday convicted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in an anti-Sikh riot case of 1984 and sentenced him to imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life, holding that the violence was a "crime against humanity" engineered by politicians with assistance from police.


Setting aside the acquittal of Sajjan Kumar, the court convicted him and five others saying that the "criminals" had escaped prosecution and punishment for over two decades.

Sajjan Kumar, 73, was asked to surrender by December 31 and directed not to leave Delhi.
