Sailors held hostage by pirates released; arrive in Mumbai

25 sailors, held hostage by Somalian pirates, arrived in Mumbai.

MUMBAI: Twenty-five sailors, who were held hostage for two months by Somalian pirates before being released last week, arrived in the city this morning.

MT Biscaglia, a Liberian flag vessel with 31 crew onboard, was hijacked on November 28 by Somali pirates at the Gulf of Aden. Besides Indians, there were three Bangladeshis, two Britons and an Irish sailor on the vessel.

The Indian crew members were held hostage while the British and Irish sailors jumped into the sea and escaped after the pirate attack. The Bangladeshis were also safe.

"We are back safe and are happy that our company made efforts to ensure our freedom," a sailor said after arriving at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport here from Muscat.

The 25 crew members will be leaving for their respective homes across the country later in the day.

The crew was released on January 24. The chemical tanker was carrying 16,282 tonnes of cargo and travelling between Indonesia and Europe.
