MUMBAI: Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam today demanded sacking of BJP MP Giriraj Singh for his remarks against Congress President Sonia Gandhi but evaded questions on the statement he made on Union Minister Smriti Irani in 2012 during a television debate.

"I can defend my remarks but I want to make it clear that the case is in court so I won't comment on it," Nirupam told PTI here.

"I condemn Singh's statements against Sonia Gandhi," he said. The BJP leader should be sacked, he added.

During a televsion debate with Irani in 2012, Nirupam said, "Aap kal tak thumke lagate the, aur aaj rajineeti mai ghoom rahi hai aap (Till yesterday you were dancing on television and today you have become a politician)."

Nirupam had received strong criticism for his statement, with Irani filing a defamation complaint against him following the incident.
