Southasian trade bloc SAARC has appointed actress and social activist Shabana Azmi as its Goodwill Ambassador for HIV and AIDS programme for its member countries in the region.
"Member nations of the Southasian bloc Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka and India met in Kathmandu in April and selected Azmi and Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya as Goodwill Ambassadors for HIV and AIDS from a large number of nominations which had been received from the member countries," an official release said.
Her name was recommended by National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), it said.
The conferment of the title as well as launch of the programme is likely to take place during the 15th SAARC Summit to be held in Colombo in August, it added.
As the Goodwill Ambassador, Azmi would facilitate the implementation of SAARC regional strategy on HIV and AIDS and its work plan in the member countries, besides addressing issues of stigma and discrimination and creating awareness.
