Russia marks 150th year of Mahatma Gandhi with series of events

A series of commemorative events are being organized in Russia to celebrate Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.

NEW DELHI: Russia has launched a special postage stamp and launched a series of events to showcase the importance of close relations between Delhi and Moscow on the 150th birth anniversary Mahatma Gandhi.

The postage stamp depicts Mahatma Gandhi himself. The stamp was issued on a sheet containing 9-12 stamps. It was presented to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 4, on the sidelines of 20th Bilateral Summit in Vladivostok, after which the stamp was officially issued.

A series of commemorative events are being organized in Russia to celebrate Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. On September 28,2019, Embassy of India, in collaboration with the Leo Tolstoy Museum and Estate and the Institute of Oriental Studies organized a day long Exhibition and Academic Conference dedicated to the deep friendship between Mahatma Gandhi and Leo Tolstoy, at the Tolstoy Estate in Yasna Polyana on 28 September 2019.


The event was inaugurated by Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar. This exhibition would also be shown at State Duma on October 2, 2019, the day of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
