New Delhi: Former law minister Kapil Sibal on Saturday accused the Centre of adopting double standards in the proposed impeachment proceedings against two high court judges.

He alleged the ruling establishment is trying to expedite the proceedings against Justice Yashwant Varma, facing alleged 'currency seizure' from his outhouse, while it is working to delay the proceedings against Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, facing hate speech charges.

Pointing out how the notice for impeachment motion signed by over 50 MPs against Justice Yadav is still pending, Sibal alleged an attempt is being made to delay the proceedings till Justice Yadav retires next year.

Sibal, who is a senior lawyer and an independent member of Rajya Sabha, said while the notice for impeachment motion against Yadav is pending for consideration, certain sections of the ruling side have made statements in support of the accused judge even as the government advocated expediting the impeachment proceedings against Justice Varma.
