Ruckus in Assembly after CM Abdullah moves resolution for full J&K statehood

Srinagar: J&K CM Omar Abdullah on Friday moved a resolution demanding the full restoration of statehood to the Union Territory, referencing the autonomy resolution that the ruling NC had passed in 2000, which triggered sharp criticism and protests from Opposition BJP legislators.

Abdullah said the resolution was an effort by the assembly to remind the Centre of its promises to Parliament and the Supreme Court. "The PM, in one of the meetings, while promising statehood had said 'yeh Modi ka waada hai' (this is Modi's promise). If it is such an important promise, why is it not being fulfilled? I will make this House aware what is the result of not getting statehood," Abdullah said in the assembly.

The resolution moved in the assembly said that "in addition to the resolutions passed by this House on 26th June 2000 and 6th November 2024, this house calls upon the Government of India for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to J&K and resolves that this resolution be forwarded to Government of India". It urged the Centre to reinstate the constitutional position of Jammu and Kashmir as it existed before August 9, 1953.


The BJP members questioned the rationale behind raking up the autonomy issue in the House, raised slogans and disrupted proceedings, following which the House was adjourned for at least 30 minutes. They jumped into the assembly well and continued to protest till the House was adjourned till September 28. The BJP members also tore apart the resolution in the assembly and raised slogans against the NC government.
