KOLKATA: A 45-year-old man, who was stabbed during the mob violence in Basirhat last evening, has succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Kolkata this morning.

The victim has been identified as Kartick Ghosh, a resident of Tetra area in Basirhat and was locally known as a RSS volunteer and BJP worker.

According to police sources, around 25 people were injured in the communal flare up at Baduria that continued for almost three days. Following the death, huge police force was deployed in and around the hospital to avoid any untoward incident. However, the workers of Trinamool Congress gathered near the hospital and started agitating as BJP leaders tried to meet the family of the victim.

BJP state president Dilip Ghosh and BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijaywargia were stopped from entering the hospital by TMC workers. Both the leaders were not allowed to meet the son of the victim at the hospital. “There is total lawlessness. The administration and police have failed miserably. We wanted to meet the family members of Kartisk Ghosh. He was our worker. It is our responsibility to be with them at this hour of grief,” said Vijaywargiya, who landed in Kolkata this morning.

Dilip Ghosh’s vehicle was gheraoed by the agitators of TMC. “They are beating our people because we wanted to meet the family members of our deceased worker. This kind of goondaism cannot go on. It has to stop,” said Ghosh. Meanwhile, Rahul Sinha, national secretary of BJP, added to the standoff between Bengal chief minister and Bengal Governor by saying that TMC cannot go on abusing the Governor as he is the “soldier of Modi vahini”.
