Rs 752 crore ordnance depot facelift project kicks off
A Rs 752-crore project to modernise Central Ordnance Depots at Agra and Jabalpur has kicked off with the government appointing Mecon Ltd as consultant.
State-owned Mecon has signed an agreement with the Defence Ministry to provide consultancy for modernisation of the two depots in partnership with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and government construction agency Military Engineer Services (MES).
The project will be completed within 45 months, Mecon said. It includes building warehousing facilities, creating higher vertical space utilisation, automatic machine handling, computerised inventory management and installation of improved fire fighting systems.
"Mecon will provide consultancy for the project which will eventually help in reducing the operating cost and reduce per tonne storage cost at those sites," a Mecon spokesperson said.
The company said it had earlier provided consultancy services for modernisation of the ordnance facility in Kanpur, which had the total project cost of Rs 200 crore.
Formerly known as Metallurgical and Engineering Consultants, Mecon is public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Steel. It is a multi-disciplinary designing, planning, engineering, consultancy and contracting organisation.
