BHOPAL: Under the recently-approved National E-Governance Plan, Rs 3,300 crore will be spent to expand the reach of online services to empower rural masses with information, Union Minister of State for Personnel Suresh Pachauri said here.

National E-Governance Plan approved by the Centre aims at sustainable development and will bring about socio-economic changes, especially in rural areas with investment to the tune of Rs 3,300 crore, Pachauri said, inaugurating the 10th National Conference on E-Governance here.

Better facilities will not only be provided to masses through online modules, but also empower them with information, he said.

Pachauri, who gave away 14 national awards in six categories for excellence in e-governance including the Golden Icon award to Madhya Pradesh, said two IT schemes to tune of Rs 117 crore and Rs 80 crore respectively have also been sanctioned.

The Centre has approved 27 missions as part of efforts to lead facilities to masses under the e-governance plan by March 2008, Union Information Technology Ministry Special Secretary R Chandrashekharan said.

Government departments will be connected through broadband up to the block level and IT centres will be formed for three villages so as to provide information and different services to the rural masses, he said.

Highlighting advances made by Madhya Pradesh in e-governance, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said IT was an essential ingredient for a corruption-free administration.
