Rs 3.5 crore cash, 5 kg gold recovered from I-T official

The CBI today recovered Rs 3.5 crore cash and 5 kg gold during searches at the Kolkata residence of Jharkhand's Principal Commissioner of Income Tax.

NEW DELHI: Our Bureau New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday registered a case against Tapas Kumar Dutta, principal commissioner of Income Tax, Ranchi; Arvind Kumar, additional commissioner of Income Tax, Ranchi and Ranjeet Kumar Lal, ITO (Tech), Ranchi on charges of criminal conspiracy, illegal gratification and criminal misconduct. Besides the aforesaid, unknown public servants, six private persons and another officer of Income Tax, Ranchi have been booked by the CBI.

The agency carried out searches at as many as 23 locations, 18 in Kolkata and five in Ranchi. A cash amount of.`3.5 crore and nearly five kg of gold was recovered by the agency in its search operations.

It is alleged that Dutta, during 2016 and 2017, entered into a criminal conspiracy with Arvind Kumar and Ranjeet Kumar Lal and five private persons — all Kolkata-based businessmen and infamous entry operators and a chartered accountant of Kolkata for getting Income Tax assessment files of their different assessee companies transferred from Kolkata/Hazaribagh to Ranchi for providing undue favour to those assessees, who had been charged with heavy tax liability in lieu of huge bribe(s).


It was further alleged that Dutta had already issued favourable orders in the case of private companies, who already paid huge bribe(s), which were allegedly stashed with a private person.

During the search at Dutta’s residence in Kolkata, cash of Rs 3.5 crore (approx) and 5 kg (approx) of gold and some incriminating documents were recovered, according to CBI.
