These fights are common in most of South India, except in Kerala. This is in spite of a ban in 1960. The fights are almost always bet on and attended by hundreds, if not thousands, of people.

45-year-old Thangulla Satish was killed by his own rooster, who he was preparing for a fight. Satish was slashed in the groin by the three-inch knife tied to the bird’s leg and bled out on the way to the hospial.

The roosters used in these fights are bred and trained for the purpose, in part due to the high stakes riding on it in the form of the many bets placed on the birds. Fights continue until one contestant is either dead or flees.
