Roemer advised NSA against seeking Headley’s extradition

NEW DELHI: Then US ambassador to India Timothy Roemer had complained to national security advisor M K Narayanan about leakage of information on Pakistani-American terrorist David Headley provided by US ."He stressed that the Indian government's discretion in protecting this information was of critical importance, calling attention to recent media speculation containing details of the FBI briefing sourced to unnamed Indian government officials, which could compromise our ability to obtain further cooperation and information from Headley," said a cable sent by Roemer - released by WikiLeaks. Narayanan had called the reports "preposterous".

Advising against seeking Headley's extradition, Roemer pointed out to Narayanan that extradition treaty's prohibition on an individual being extradited for the same offence might be an obstacle. "If Headley were convicted, an extradition request by India would not be considered until his sentence in the US was fully served, which could be decades, if ever," he had said.
