Initiating the debate on the railway budget in Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley said: “The principal object of the railways is to transport freight and passengers and connecting the whole country.

BJP on Tuesday came down heavily on the railway budget, accusing Mamata Banerjee of steering the ministry into non-core activities, of failing to reflect the true and honest picture of its financial health and of making announcements only to forget them later, reports Our Political Bureau from New Delhi.

Initiating the debate on the railway budget in Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley said: ���The principal object of the railways is to transport freight and passengers and connecting the whole country. It must ensure safety and comfort at reasonable prices. The minister has raised the issue of split personality of the railways through a debate on economic viability Vs social viability.

The social purpose of the railways can be achieved only if it���s economically viable. A bankrupt railways cannot underwrite its social responsibility. One is not an alternative to the other.���
