NEW DELHI: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju today questioned Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi over his statement on demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes saying his comments were self-contradictory.

"Which is right? Before confusing people's mind pls be clear yourself first. Support crack down on corruption, black money & terror funding (sic)," Rijiju tweeted, referring to the statement made by Gandhi in Mumbai yesterday.

Rahul had alleged the Modi government had alerted BJP people of demonetisation beforehand. He had also said, "I don't think even Finance Minister knew about demonetisation announcement.”

Rijiju said, "Both statements can't be coming from the same man in less than 5 minutes.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on November 8 said Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes will cease to be legal tender and asked people holding such notes to deposit or exchange them with banks. He had said new Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 notes would be introduced with different colour and design.

The announcement led to cash crunch and long queues in banks and ATMs to exchange old notes and withdraw money.
