Rift in Meghalaya government over 'shady' power deals

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Donkupar Roy is facing mounting pressure to scrap the controversial power deal made with private companies, with key allies in the government - the United Democratic Party and the NCP - reiterating their opposition to the 'shady' deals.
UDP MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh told reporters after a party meeting late last night that the party has urged the chief minister to scrap the deals because it was a commitment made to people ahead of the March elections by the party.
Echoing similar tunes, NCP president W R Kharluki also demanded scrapping of the deals in the interest of the people.
The six controversial deals were made by the previous Congress government with private firms to develop the state's power projects.
Several quarters, including the influential Khasi Students Union, have smelled a rat in the deals, saying they violated the state's power policy and were not done in transparent manner.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance government has distributed a copy of the recommendation made by an expert committee on ramifications of the deals to its cabinet members.
The cabinet is expected to meet next week to decide on the fate of the power deals.
All the alliance partners of the MPA government will also meet next week to exchange views on the deals.
There was no official word from the government side as yet on the issue.
