Rice urges Musharraf to hold elections

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Monday called on Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf to "return to a constitutional path" and hold elections after the military ruler declared a state of emergency.

RAMALLAH: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Monday called on Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf to "return to a constitutional path" and hold elections after the military ruler declared a state of emergency.

"We think that the best thing for Pakistan is to return to a constitutional path and then hold elections," Rice told a press conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah where she has been meeting with Palestinian leaders.

"It is also true that President Musharraf said that he would take off his uniform and that would be an important step," she added.

Musharraf declared a state of emergency on Saturday in Pakistan, in a move opposition leader Benazir Bhutto said amounted to a "second coup."
