KOZHIKODE: In a statement that could trigger a debate in Left circles, Kerala Chief Minister and CPI-M politburo member V S Achuthanandan has said re-unification of CPI-M and CPI in future could not be ruled out.

Reacting to reporters' query on recent statements from CPI leaders on the need to strengthen the Communist unity, he said such a possibility could not be discounted completely.

He, however, said such a thing would happen only after the present unity of the two parties gaining further strength through united action.

Achuthanandan's statement on the issue assumes significance as it came close on the heels of a three-part article in the party's official organ 'Deshabhimani,' which dismissed the chance of the merger of the two parties in the near future, since their programmes differed fundamentally despite working together on the Left unity platform.

The article was penned by the daily's Chief editor and state secretariat member V V Dakshinamoorthy, a staunch supporter of CPI-M state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.

The ongoing debate on the issue was sparked by CPI state secretary Veliyam Bhargavan on the need to start thinking of the re-unification of the two parties since the ideological and political situations that led to the divide in the Indian communist movement in early 1960 had changed.
