Return car festival held in Puri amid tight security

Return car festival was held in Puri amid tight security with the tragic death of 6 pilgrims in a stampede during Rath yatra.

PURI: With the tragic death of six pilgrims in a stampede during Rath yatra fresh in mind, the return car festival was held here on Saturday amid tight security.

Thousands of devotees thronged the holy town to have a glimpse of the presiding deities of Jagannath temple as they began their return journey after a nine-day sojourn at Gundicha temple, their aunt's place.

Special security arrangements were made in view of the July 4 stampede when the victims near the chariots were trampled over by a surging crowd following sudden break of barricade.

Over 2,500 police personnel, including anti-naxal squads, were deployed in the city. Bomb disposal squads, dog squads and Rapid Action Force also remained on guard, the police said.

Sharp shooters and Quick Reaction Teams (QRT) were positioned atop buildings along the Grand Avenue and at selected points in the city, they said.

Anti-naxal commandos guarded the temple and close circuit cameras were installed at major locations along the grand road, they said, adding that routine checks were carried out at hotels and guest houses.

The district administration made elaborate arrangements for the festival, while volunteers and workers from different organisations also extended help to the devotees.
