Restrictions in parts of Srinagar in view of Hurriyat Conference strike
SRINAGAR: Authorities today imposed restrictions in parts of old city here to prevent any law and order situation in view of the strike called by moderate Hurriyat Conference against extending lease of the Army firing range at Tosa Maidan in Budgam district.

"Restrictions on the movement of people have been imposed in some areas of the old city," a police spokesman said.

Police and paramilitary personnel in riot gear have been deployed in strength at sensitive places in the city and major towns to maintain law and order during the separatist- sponsored strike.

Moderate Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq had called for a strike today against extension in the lease of firing range at Tosa Maidan.

Most of the educational institutions, shops and other business establishments remained closed in the city and across major towns of the valley, officials said.

While public transport was scarce, private cars, auto- rickshaws and cabs plied normally, they said. The work in courts was also affected as Bar Association has lent support to the strike.
