New Delhi: The Opposition Congress has termed the 30-day waiver from the US allowing Indian refineries to purchase Russian oil humiliating for India's sovereignty and global standing.

The Opposition has questioned the Modi government's "wait for" the waiver to import when Russia was very much ready to sell its oil to India. "In Amrit Kaal, the Indian PM has to beg before other countries to purchase oil from where he wishes to. It is deeply humiliating for India's sovereignty and international standing that it needs a US "waiver" to purchase oil from a time-tested partner like Russia. Instead of standing up to the US dictating terms, a compromised PM Modi is handing our energy sovereignty on a platter to other countries," said AICC general secretary (org) KC Venugopal. He advocated that India must take a strong independent stance and decide what is in supreme national interest rather than allow other countries to dictate to us.

"Foreign minister S Jaishankar said that no country now has the power to rule over all nations. But the situation here is such that your entire government has surrendered to America. America said, 'We are offering a waiver', and the Modi government accepted the waiver with folded hands. By doing this, isn't the Modi government allowing America to bully us?" said Pawan Khera, Congress spokesperson.
