Republican Hindu goes in damage control mode as Donald Trump and Nawaz Sharif speak over phone

After US President elect Donald Trump’s phone call to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during which the two, reportedly, had a very cordial conversation, the Indian supporters of Trump appear to have gone into damage control mode.

"The Republican Hindu Coalition (RHC) has already forged a very strong alliance with the President elect and he was present at our event before his election in New jersey in October where he spoke very cordially about India, Hindus and PM Narendra Modi," Shalabh Kumar, the founder of RHC and one of Trump’s big ticket donors told ET.

He explained that the RHC event and Trump’s speech had been widely reported about in Pakistan media and caused concern in political circles there.

"Pakistani American supporters of President elect Trump have been making efforts to build bridges between his transition team and the Pakistani government. The phone call, that was made 20 days after the election of Trump to the Pakistan PM was the culmination of these efforts," Kumar explained.

He, however, feels that the move by the Pakistan government to make public the call between the two leaders was a breach of protocol. Usually, there is a joint communique from both sides if such communication has to be made public, which did not happen in this case.

"Further, Trump’s statement which came after the official release from Pakistan has been toned down. Besides, it is widely known that India is America’s friend and ally in the south Asian region and there is no need to broadcast the fact about which there are no doubts in the President elect’s mind."
