COIMBATORE: The concept of commercial agriculture, needs to be redefined in the light of recent developments in the sector, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Vice-Chancellor Dr C Ramaswamy has said.

Anything produced for the market may not necessarily qualify as commercial agriculture, whereas, high level of farm production with plenty of marketable surplus should be the basis for it, Ramasamy, said, while inaugurating a 21-day training on 'commercial agriculture.'

Market forces, rising labour scarcity, shifting cropping systems, micro irrigation, new inputs like liquid fertilizers, biofuel crops, growing water scarcity and increasing demand for agricultural land were some of the important factors that were shaping the present day agriculture, told the media.

The country has moved from subsistence agriculture to 'green revolution agriculture' and now the focus was on sustainable Fnd commercial agriculture and 'market driven agriculture.'

Saying that conservation of natural resources was since essential, both sustainable and commercial agriculature has to coexist in a complementary and balanced manner, Ramasway said priority should be given to 'vertical integration.'
Twenty agricultural scientists from different parts of the country are articipating in the training, sponsored by Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
