Red Fort in the national capital will be closed for the public for over a week from August 8 as a security measure for the preparation of the Independence Day celebration.

NEW DELHI: Red Fort in the national capital will be closed for the public for over a week from August 8 as a security measure for the preparation of the Independence Day celebration.

"Like every year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address the nation and unfurl the national flag from the rampart of the historic monument, Red Fort," Muhammed K K, Superintending Archaeologist from Archaeological Survey of India said in a statement here.

For security reasons, the monument will be closed for the public and general visitors like every year from August 8 till the Independence Day celebration is over on 15th August, he added.

Every year since independence of the country in 1947, the country has been celebrating the occasion at the Red Fort, constructed during AD 1639-1648.
