Recruitment scam: Court sends Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of Partha Chatterjee, to one-day ED custody
Chatterjee is under medical treatment at SSKM hospital and was shifted to ICU last night, where he is being treated for COPD, kidney issues and other comorbidities. The hearing at the High Court is likely at 4 pm today.
Chatterjee and Mukherjee were arrested on Saturday after more than 27 hours of marathon interrogation. The agency seized around Rs 21.20 crore in cash, gold ornaments, foreign currencies and many documents from a room in the residential premises of Mukherjee.
Mukherjee will be produced in court again tomorrow.
Earlier in the day, ED has moved Calcutta High Court to shift arrested Chatterjee from state-run SSKM hospital to Command Hospital.
Chatterjee, who is also Trinamool Congress secretary general, has been remanded to ED custody for two days and will be produced in a PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court on Monday. He was produced at Bankshal court in the afternoon following a health check-up at ESI hospital.
Following appeal by Chatterjee's lawyer, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate ordered on yesterday evening that Chatterjee be taken to SSKM hospital, a West Bengal run Medical college and multi-super specialty hospital, for treatment. Chatterjee was feeling unwell after a 27-hour interrogation by the agency.
The Trinamool political heavyweights are known to take refuge in SSKM hospital when they are summoned by CBI or ED. One such example was Birbhum state President Anubrata Mondal, who went to SSKM on the day of summon, when he was called for interrogation in connection with alleged multi-crore cow smuggling scam.
