Reconsider implementing odd-even formula: CAIT to Delhi CM

CAIT to Delhi CMNEW DELHI: Traders body CAIT today asked Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to reconsider implementing the odd-even formula for vehicles as it would prove "detrimental" to local trade in the national capital.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said that the decision would kill the commodity distribution network in Delhi.

Citing the example of Singapore, it said variable office hours for schools, courts, government offices, commercial markets and private sector could help in reducing vehicular pollution in peak hours.

"Dilution of peak hours and resolving traffic jam situation is the answer for less pollution in Delhi and any formula should meet these two conditions", it said in a statement.

CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said the supply line of commodities would be hit due to this decision.

"In odd-even formula, no exemption has been given to truck and tempo which carry goods not only from other states but also within the city and it will greatly affect smooth flow of goods resulting in scarcity of commodities and escalation in prices", he said.

He said Singapore had successfully adopted variable timings for offices, schools etc. way back in 1975. CAIT has asked Delhi government to deliberate on the suggestion with all stakeholders.

The odd-even vehicle scheme will come into force from January 1.
