It’s historical moment, not time for politics: Prahlad Joshi

The opposition parties contend that President Droupadi Murmu should do the honours as she was not only the Head of State, but also an integral part of Parliament as she summons, prorogues, and addresses it.

New Parliament building: Why Opposition parties are boycotting the inauguration
After several parties refused to be part of the new Parliament inauguration function, the Union parliamentary affairs minister, Prahlad Joshi, said the opposition should reconsider its decision.

“I would like to tell them that this is a historical event. This is not the time for politics...Boycotting and making an issue of it is unfortunate. I appeal to them to reconsider their decision and join this historical function,” Joshi said.

Meanwhile, 13 alliance partners of the BJP have supported the inauguration by PM and have condemned the Oppostion boycott of the ceremony.

“We, the undersigned parties of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), unequivocally condemn the contemptuous decision of 19 political parties to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building scheduled for Sunday, 28th May.

This act is not merely disrespectful, it is a blatant affront to the democratic ethos and constitutional values of our great nation,” NDA parties said in a joint press statment.
