CHANDIGARH: Haryana Police registered two murder cases against Rampal Maharaj and his supporters following the death of six persons during the standoff with the police at his ashram. He was produced before the Punjab and Haryana High Court which sent him to judicial custody till November 28.

DGP SN Vashisht confirmed that 425 people were arrested by the police, out of which 116 are from Haryana, 8 from Rajasthan and 10 from Bihar. Others arrested hailed from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. “We will interrogate those arrested,” said the Vashisht and added that Rampal’s aide Baljit had also been arrested.

Rampal’s daughter, Babita, has also been arrested. “Around 4,000 people had now left the ashram, out of which 1,500 were women. The ashram is now unoccupied.

Although we will try to complete the search of the ashram quickly, it will take time,” said Vashisht.

An advocate appointed to assist the court said that the expenditure on security and protection should be borne by Rampal. The court has asked all those named in the contempt case to be present on November 28. The Haryana government will also submit a comprehensive report on this day. The DGP has been asked to file an affidavit.
