NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha today mourned the death of imminent jurist and former Supreme Court judge V R Krishna Iyer.

When the House met for the day, Chairman Hamid Ansari mentioned of the passing away of Iyer on December 4 at the age of 100.

Describing him as a renowned legal luminary, Ansari said Iyer began his career as an advocate and rose to become a judge of Supreme Court from 1973 to 1980.

He was a social reformer whose judgements upheld human rights and rule of law, he said.

"In passing away of K R Krishna Iyer, the country has lost a legal luminary and a dedicated social reformer," he said.

Members thereafter stood in silence as mark of respect to the departed soul.
