Parliament approves extension of President’s Rule in Manipur by another 6 months
Rajya Sabha approved the extension of President's Rule in Manipur. This decision came amid opposition sloganeering. The extension is for another six months, starting August 13, 2025. Lok Sabha already passed a similar resolution. President's Rule ...

Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha Harivansh called Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai to move the Statutory Resolution in the Upper House when proceedings resumed at 2 PM. The Opposition raised slogans demanding a discussion of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar and alleged that this is an attempt to steal votes and strike off names of eligible voters.
The statutory resolution states: “That this House approves the continuance in force of the proclamation dated the 13th February 2025 in respect of Manipur, issued under Article 356 of the Constitution, by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from 13th August, 2025”.
As TMC, DMK, Congress and other parties raised slogans and some members walked to the threshold of the Well of the House, the Deputy Chairman asked members to speak on the resolution. Sushmita Dev (TMC) used the opportunity to speak on SIR and was cut short by the Chair. Muzibulla Khan (BJD) and Subash Chandra Bose Pilli (YSRCP) spoke briefly on the issue.
Union Minister Rai spoke briefly in reply to the short debate before it was passed in the din through a voice vote.
Manipur had been placed under President’s Rule on February 13 soon after Chief Minister N Biren Singh quit his post. The North-East state has been facing ethnic violence between Kukis and Meiteis for some months prior to this decision and the elected government had failed to bring the situation under control.
The extension of President’s Rule will come into effect from August 13 when the first six months get over.
