Chetia, who is wanted in Assam for multiple cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion, was been handed over to India this morning.

NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today welcomed the handing over of ULFA general secretary Anup Chetia to India by Bangladesh saying it reflected the neighbouring country's commitment and maturity to cooperate on issues like terror.

"Handing over of Anup Chetia by Bangladesh shows its commitment and maturity to cooperate with India on issues like terror and organised crime," Singh said in a statement here.

The Home Minister thanked Bangladesh for its active cooperation in sending Chetia to India.

"I welcome handing over of Anup Chetia to India by Bangladesh," he said.

Chetia, who is wanted in Assam for multiple cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion, was been handed over to India this morning.

He was arrested in Bangladesh in 1997 for illegally entering that country in forged documents.

Union Home Ministry sources said the process of handing over of Chetia has been going on for last six months through Intelligence and diplomatic sources that resulted his handing over to India now.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath Singh today called up Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and informed him about India taking over the custody of top ULFA leader Anup Chetia.

During a telephonic conversation, Singh and Gogoi discussed about various cases registered against Chetia in Assam.
