Rajiv Bhattacharjee appointed as Tripura BJP president

Ahead of next year’s assembly polls, BJP on Thursday appointed Tripura unit vice-president Rajiv Bhattacharjee as president of the state committee.

BJP national general secretary Arun Singh in a communication announced the appointment of Bhattacharjee. He has replaced Chief Minister Manik Saha.

Saha had in January 2020 become party president in Tripura taking over from Biplab Kumar Deb. On May 15 this year, Saha became chief minister replacing Deb in a sudden political development.


A senior BJP leader who does not want to be named told ET, “There might be further changes in the organisation. We are fully prepared for next year’s assembly polls.”

On Wednesday party’s national general secretary B L Santosh, Tripura chief minister Manik Saha and his deputy Jishnu Debvarma had rushed from Agartala to Guwahati to attend the meeting. Assam chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was also present in the meeting.

BJP’s national president JP Nadda and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat are expected to visit the state to attend organisational functions.

BJP's tribal leader in Autonomous District Council (ADC) Hangsa Tripura joined 'Tipra Motha' party on Tuesday. Along with Hansha Tripura, 6,500 people from 3,000 families also joined "Tipra Motha".

The BJP along with ally Indigenous People's Front of Tripura routed the Left Front in Tripura in 2018. In the 60-member Tripura assembly, BJP won 36 seats and IPFT eight while the CPIM secured 16 seats.
